Rebecca Sparkes is a fully trained psychotherapist and addictions counsellor, with over 15 years’ experience of working with clients, both in private practice and in the NHS:

Rebecca specialises in addictions (alcohol, recreational drugs, prescription drugs), eating disorders (including anorexia, bulimia, orthorexia and exercise addictions), anxiety, depression and compulsive behaviours (on-line addictions, gambling, compulsive spending, sex addiction). Why Are Professional Women Drinking So Much?

Professional women in Britain, are drinking to dangerous levels, according to a recent OECD report, claiming one in five women drinks “hazardously”.  Hazardously is described as consuming over twice the safe limit of 14 units of alcohol.

 
The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) report, published at the end of the last year, describes this rise as “the dark side equality”.  Women are drinking more to fit in at work, to keep up with a traditionally male drinking culture.

Switch Off and Switch On – Why a digital detox improves happiness and well-being

Is our use of digital devices now an unmanageable aspect of modern life?  With the average UK adult now reported to spend more time on a screen than they do asleep, many of us are questioning the effects of the “permanently switched on” on-line culture.  

The report, by University of Leeds, found that adults in the UK spend an average of 8 hours and forty one minutes on a screen.  We check our smartphone on average 150 times a day .  We spend approximately two and a half hours a day on social media – up from one and a half hours calculated in 2012 as average.

Dealing with Depression – Five Things Which Make a Difference:

Depression comes in many shapes and forms.  While it’s perfectly normal to feel sad and anxious even hopeless, sometimes, a pervasive low mood might indicate depression.

Depression may be in reaction to a situation such as a relationship break up or job loss.  It might be related to an underlying health condition or to hormonal changes in the body such as during pregnancy and childbirth.  Whatever the catalyst, it is important to you see your GP and discuss your symptoms.
